KAYAKING AND CANOEING

General Information

Southern Chile Expeditions selected the Patagonian Waters organization to offer kayaking and canoe expeditions at our El PATAGON Lodge because Patagonian Waters prides itself on providing a very personal and individualized service to its clients.  Expedition parties are comprised of no more than 12 persons.

The Patagonian Waters Experience

We are recognized internationally for the high quality rafting and canoeing expeditions we offer to our clients.  We earned this recognition based on our highly qualified international guide staff and by providing our clients with the best equipment available on the market.

Our goal is for our kayaking expeditions to be an unforgettable experience for every single client. We are proud to offer our services in one of the most remote and unspoiled environments in the entirety of the Patagonia.  We put our guests in intimate contact with the beauty and spirit of our untouched natural surroundings.  We are convinced that your experience is enhanced greatly by moving slowly through our environment.  We believe using the power of ones body to move through this environment is important to involve the entire person.

Patagonian Waters offers its expeditions on calm and easy flowing waters.  Our objective is to provide you with an opportunity to enjoy yourself in an unblemished and natural setting and at the same time, not putting you in situations that cause you to fear for your health or life.

No special physical fitness is required to participate in our expeditions.  Our expeditions are designed for persons of average health and fitness.  Our clients are generally in the range of thirty to sixty years of age.  Our expeditions are planned around the physical capabilities of our clients.   When you request your reservations, we require that you inform us of any related physical problems or any special physical conditions you may have which would affect your safety while with us.  It is important to recognize that due to the remoteness of our location and expeditions, the proximity of doctors, professional medical care and hospitals can be, in some instances, many hours away. See our information concerning weather and temperature conditions.

Equipment provided by Patagonian Waters

Kayak and Canoe Equipment

We use NECKY Sea kayaks and MAD RIVER canoes.  Our NECKY boats are made of Superlinear Polyethylene. They are strong, durable and able to withstand the knocks and abrasions to which they are subjected. Keyhole cockpits are wide enough for ease of entry and can even accommodate a XL- person. The kayaks are equipped with a rudder for easy maneuvering and control. Our watercraft have 3 independent compartments, separated by bulkheads, to maintain their ability to float and make them very difficult to sinkable.

Our guests have a choice between two different types of kayaks.  The AMARUK is an 18-foot long double touring kayak with ample room and four flotation compartments.  A double kayak means extra flotation safety.  It also offers the advantage to team a stronger person with a person of less strength.  The other kayak we provide is the ZOAR, an easy-to-paddle single boat that has great balance of glide and maneuverability for those with more experience or who enjoy being alone in their boat.  Our Kayak paddles are designed and made by WERNER Paddles which we believe to be the best paddles made in the industry.

Our Mad River Canoes are the 17-foot long EXPLORER models.  This model is stable, secure and spacious. It provides efficient glide and easy maneuvering in moving water.  We have beautiful wooden paddles which match the natural wooden gunwales of our canoes.  You will really enjoy their beautiful workmanship and stability as you tour our waters.

Paddle clothing

To keep you dry and comfortable we selected our paddle clothing from the KOKOTAT line. We provide you with a Gore-Tex Tec Tour Anorak and boaters pants for wet weather. For sunny days you are outfitted with the KOKOTAT short paddle. We also use their life jacket (PFD) and, for kayak expedition members, the KOKOTAT sprayskirt.

Camping equipment

To make sure that your personal gear will stay dry, we provide you with several CASCADE dry-bags. For your comfort around camp and while you sleep, you are supplied with a luxurious THERMAREST combo mattress and Chair. It is 2.5 inches thick, and is, what we consider to be, the best camping mattress in the world.  It is easily converted into a comfortable camp chair to allow you to relax while in camp. We provide you with a 3 person WALRUS tent for your own personal use.  Obviously, if you have a traveling companion with whom you wish to share a tent, no problem. However, for those who wish to have their own personal and spacious sleeping environment--you've got it.

Safety Policy

The personal safety of our clients is paramount. To make the adventure as safe as possible we use high quality equipment. Our guides are highly qualified and have been trained to meet international standards in their qualification and certification.  We accompany all expeditions with outboard powered boats equipped with two-way radio communications. At times, we are hours away from the nearest hospital and all guests must take into account the personal risk associated with that reality. Prior to finalizing your booking, you will be required to sign a release of liability recognizing these conditions.

Lago Rosselot Kayak Expedition

Day 1: Our staff will meet you in the airport at Chaiten and drive you to El Patagon Lodge.  On your first evening we will dine in the El Patagon Lodge dining room. You may choose to take advantage of our riverside sauna and hot tub.  To get an idea of the beauty of this location,  check out EL PATAGON Lodge by clicking here.

Day 2: We'll have an early breakfast in the El Patagon dining room. Following breakfast you will be provided with your rafting equipment. Our expedition begins with a raft trip down the Figueroa River to our point of departure on Lake Rosselot.  A professional rafting guide will be in charge of your raft as we float approximately 5 miles of the Rio Figueroa on class 1-2 waters. Two small class 2 rapids will be part of our scenic float trip through untouched wilderness. You値l have the choice to help with the paddling or you may just relax and enjoy the sights and bird sounds on your float through this temperate rain forest. The Figueroa River, (as shown on the El Patagon Lodge Page) is a beautiful, emerald green, free-flowing free stone river located amidst a temperate rain forest.  We値l be in an isolated area with almost no resident population. It is a unique opportunity and experience in the world today.

On arrival at the delta of the Figueroa on the lake, you'll be given the choice of traveling in a Necky sea-kayak or a 17-foot Mad River Explorer Canoe. You decide what type of watercraft you wish to travel in on this expedition.  Your guide will introduce you to the principles of paddling a kayak and/or canoe if this is your first experience. If you elect to use a kayak, you may choose a single or a double cockpit sea-kayak.

We will lunch on the shore of Lake Rosselot. Following lunch, we値l cross the lake and visit a local Chilean farmer. We call this location Campo El Porvenir.  Not only will you see a typical and rustic Chilean farm, we'll also enjoy fresh meat and vegetables from their garden farm to prepare a typical Patagonian assado. We'll spend the night in our ample and luxurious tents.  For your comfort, we'll provide you with a 3-person tent for your personal use.  In case of rain, the less adventurous among us, may chose to retire to the Fogon, a typical 8-sided wooden structure, in lieu of sleeping in your tent.

Day 3: After a shore side breakfast we'll board our sea-kayaks (or canoes) and head to the southern shore of the lake.  Our trip will cover approximately 12 miles over the water.  We'll pass several beautiful waterfalls on our way. At our destination, we may have the good fortune to see huge salmon making their way up the two small rivers that flow down the valley from nearby glaciers.  Following our lunch, we'll paddle back to campo El Porvenir and stay there for the night..
Day 4: : Following breakfast, we'll paddle to the northern end of the lake. The beauty of this area is striking. As we head north, we'll see mountainous features that will make this an unforgettable experience for you.  On the northern shore of Lake Rosselot, we will be picked up and driven back to El Patagon where we'll enjoy our dinner in the dining room, and take advantage of the riverside sauna and hot tub.

Day 5:Those who have finished their expedition on Lake Rosselot will travel back to Chaiten and fly back to Puerto Montt.  There our staff will pick you up and take you to Yan Kee Way Lodge, if you are continuing you expedition, or assist you for you while you make connections to your flight home from Puerto Montt.

For those who have scheduled their expedition to continue from El Patagon down the Palena River to the Pacific Ocean, their schedule, following breakfast, will begin. This schedule is identified on the Day 2 portion of the Palena River Float.

The Palena River Kayak Expedition

Day 1 - Our staff will meet you at the Chaiten airport and drive you to El Patagon Lodge. On your first evening we will dine in the El Patagon dining room.  You may choose to take advantage of our riverside sauna and hot tub.

Day 2 - (Day 5 of a combined expedition): After having breakfast in the restaurant we will get ready to leave for the Palena River. This river will carry us out of the Andes and down stream to the Pacific. You will be provided with your equipment and then we値l board our truck for a short and scenic 15 mile-drive that will bring us to the banks of the river. There you will be introduced into the art of river paddling and our safety rules. After that, we'll take off in our 17-foot Mad River canoes.  (Those who can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of our guide staff, their ability and skill with a sea Kayak may be provided a sea kayak for this expedition.  The final decision and determination of watercraft rests solely with our guide staff).  Our first night will be spent at a beautiful location along the shores of the Palena that includes a natural Hot Spring.

Day 3 - (Day 6 of a combined expedition): Our daylong float will take us down the Palena River. This river flows through and is surrounded by temperate rain forest. We'll see a variety of bird life as we move westward toward the Pacific.  We'll round a turn, and suddenly see a huge ice-covered volcano, the Melimoyu. We will enjoy the beauty of this volcano for several hours as we float down the Palena. We値l spend our second night at another beautiful location on the river.

Day 4 - (Day 7 of a combined expedition): We値l arrive at the mouth of the Palena where it joins with the Pacific Ocean.  We'll cross a protected bay in order to reach an isolated little harbor town by the name of Puerto Raul Marin Balmaceda.  There is no road to this settlement.  The only method of arriving here is by sea or by coming down the river as we did.  We'll check-in into a very small local hotel and enjoy our unique location and the local settlement.

Day 5 - (Day 8 of a combined expedition): We finish up our expedition today. One of ouret boats will take us back up the Palena River where we値l encounter one of our vehicles that will be waiting to take us back to Chaiten where we'll travel by airplane to Puerto Montt.
